This project is truly innovative in its ability to transcend the site's size limitations. It delivers a sense of space and variety of experience throughout, comfortably creating a 3-bedroom home on a single bedroom workers cottage site. Whilst compact design is common in big cities, the typical belief that bigger is better still dominates the Australia mentality. This project delivers a highly sophisticated palette within a well resolved sequence of spaces.
The Bellbird House is a home which captures delight for all senses – each room has a view out and up to the treetops and sky; the sounds of the birdlife, insects and bees, rain on the tin roof and wind through the trees can be heard moving through its spaces; the feel of the warm sun which penetrates the house in summer and the breezes circulated via cross flow ventilation as the house is opened up and the smells of eucalyptus and native grasses make this house a peaceful sanctuary for its clients. Villa Italia is our take on the Nuovo Brunswick, an inner city family home for a first and second generation Italian migrant family. As long term residents of East Brunswick ourselves, we have witnessed the passing of many elderly Italian migrants, whereby family homes are sold as their children search for larger space in the suburbs. Over time this has diluted the strength of an amazing cultural influence in the area. This project addresses the needs of a family who wished to stay in their community and sacrifice scale for: beauty, dense urban vitality and their community connection. Splinter Society Architecture.
